Overview of requesting and using images for publication purposes. This guide also provides additional resources for understanding copyright and fair use.

How to get started:

Which image you need, and how you intend to use it, determines which steps to take to get permission for use and access to an image file

Steps:

  • Find/select image needed for the project
  • Determine how you will use it (publication, school project, etc.)
  • Know type of image (work of art, archive, etc.)
    • Image type informs what permissions are required and how to obtain an image file
  • Consider fair use
    • Fair use is the use of copyrighted materials that do not require permission from the copyright holder 
    • Learn more about how to determine fair use

Getting permission to use an image:

If an image is copyrighted, you'll need to obtain permission to use it 

Steps:

  • Determine if image is copyrighted
  • Determine person/organization managing copyrighted image 
  • Request permission from person/organization managing the copyright to use the image

Getting an image file for the project:

It is likely you will need to request an image file
