Little magazines are periodicals committed to avant-garde and noncommercial writings, which began in the late 19th century and continued through the 20th century. Georgia O’Keeffe owned an impressive collection of important and lesser known little magazines, some of which are on display in this exhibition.
Little magazines are periodicals committed to avant-garde and noncommercial writings, which began in the late 19th century and continued through the 20th century. Most publications operated with little financial support and had short irregular runs. However, little magazines played a critical role in providing a forum for writers who, although now are some of our most noted authors and artists, had at the time no outlet for their unconventional and experimental work. Little magazines helped launch writers such as Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce, and spread artist movements such as surrealism and dada.
